Railways

Somehow in a blog mostly covering programming, here’s my most nerdy recent escapade - railway modelling.

Z-Scale Railway Modelling

One of the smallest scenic railway scales, the tracks are just 6.5mm apart. The entire layout pictured below fits in about 1.8m x 0.6m. This is my first attempt at something like this, and took about three months altogether.

Details

A few photos to show off the overall scenery.

Bridge

The bridge was designed from scratch, 3d printed and painted red to look a bit like a Japanese bridge (Kurobe Gorge Railway).

The water is two-part epoxy resin, tinted slightly blue with acrylic paint. Once this set, I applied a surface layer of acrylic paint medium which I could model into ripples and waves as it set, Eventually, the surface was lightly dry-brushed with white acryllic to simulate small waves.

Waterfall

The waterfall is cotton-wool dipped in two-part epoxy-resin and layered carefully in place.

The tunnel is designed, 3d-printed and painted.

The cliff-face is polyfilla dried with a heat-gun to cause semi-random cracking.

The trees are twisted copper wire with small pieced of painted sponge attached.
